About Emporos

An informed approach, grounded by experience

Emporos International is an independent practice that helps organisations, private clients and their advisers prepare for and carry out activity across borders. We combine contextual understanding with practical field capability, adapting our work to the client’s objectives, requirements and operating environment.

Experience and approach

Our approach combines an academic grounding in conflict anthropology, applied conflict analysis and more than two decades of international field experience spanning humanitarian and development programmes, commercial projects and private-client assignments across the Middle East, Asia, the Pacific, Europe and the Americas. This experience includes United Nations field-security coordination, humanitarian mine action, commercial security risk advisory and investigative field reporting.

Research, direct observation and local engagement inform our judgement. Experience informs how we apply it: testing assumptions, recognising constraints and preparing arrangements suited to the assignment. Attention to local perspectives and the effects of a client’s presence is part of that approach, guided by respect for people’s rights and the principle of doing no harm.

Independence and accountability

Each commission has a senior lead and an agreed brief, incorporating the client’s own standards and working practices where available. We remain accountable for the quality and competent execution of our agreed work, with responsibilities and reporting arrangements established from the outset.

We work discreetly and report findings candidly, including where they challenge the client’s assumptions or proposed plans. Emporos accepts no commissions, mark-ups or referral fees from providers it assesses, recommends or coordinates, and makes no facilitation payments.

Regional focus

Based in the Black Sea region, we focus primarily on the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions, including Ukraine, and are available to support projects across the wider EMEA region and beyond. We take our name from the ancient Greek emporos—a merchant-traveller, or ‘one in passage’- connecting our regional focus with the international nature of our work.
